For teachers and families
Goal: get the robot to the blue tiles and switch on its bulb on each one. To do that you build an algorithm with blocks: move forward, turn left, turn right, jump, switch on the light and the functions F1 and F2.
What children learn
- Sequencing: the robot does exactly what the program says, in order.
- Debugging: if something goes wrong, you look at where the robot stopped, find the wrong block and fix it. The Step button runs one command at a time.
- Modularity: when the main program runs out of room, you look for patterns that repeat and keep them in F1 or F2.
- Loops: a function that calls itself at the end repeats until the mission is done (chapter 4).
- Spatial orientation: left and right are the robot's, not the player's. The arrow on its head shows which way it is facing. The camera buttons turn the view without changing the robot.
Robot rules
- Forward only works if the square in front is at the same height.
- Jump climbs a step of height 1 or goes down any height.
- Light lights up the blue tile the robot is standing on.
In class or at home
- Shared screen: project the level and let the group dictate the program before pressing Go!
- No screens: draw a grid on the floor. One child is the robot, with their eyes covered, and the others dictate the sequence with arrow cards. Then they try to shorten it by grouping what repeats.
